Between the rising wages for milkmaids and higher commodity costs, buying all the items in the classic song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" would cost 3.1 percent more this year.

That's the word from PNC Wealth Management in Pittsburgh.

It puts the pricetag for buying each item once at $19,507. It would cost $78,100 to buy the 364 items, from a single partridge in a pear tree to the 12 drummers drumming, repeatedly on each day as the song suggests.

The eight maids-a-milking, who make minimum wage, would see an increase of more than 13 percent this year. Congress approved a hike in the minimum wage for the first time in a decade. For an hour of milking, you'd have to pay $46.80.

Five gold rings would cost just under $400. That's up more than 21 percent over last year.

Letters to the Editors

Combine days as reminder of duty

With the major elections one year away, and all the commentary and dismay about low voter turnout for elections, why not combine Election Day with Veterans Day?

Veterans have fought and died for the right of U.S. citizens to vote. We can combine patriotism and civic duty with honoring the people who have offered their services and in many cases their lives to keep us free.

Make Nov. 11 a national, non-working holiday and make it a win-win for America.

Doctor Who is a long-running award-winning British science fiction television programme produced by the BBC. The programme depicts the adventures of a mysterious time-traveller known as "the Doctor" who travels in his time ship, the TARDIS, which appears from the exterior to be a blue police phone box. With his companions, he explores time and space, solving problems and righting wrongs.

President John F. Kennedy Assassinated (1963)

The assassination of John F. Kennedy while he was riding in a presidential motorcade in Dallas was a seminal event in American history. Although two official investigations have concluded that Lee Harvey Oswald was the culprit, the assassination is still the subject of widespread speculation and has spawned a number of conspiracy theories.

I was too young to remember this. For me, *my* first "world event" wasn't even Apollo 13, but the Challenger Tragedy. I can still remember with crystal clarity exactly where I was and what I was doing when I found out.

so today is the annual 'stuff yourself silly' day for the United States. At least this year, I did receive an invite to share dinner with friends (waves to Dave) but alas, not enough time to clean out my van, make sure it had enough petrol in it, etc...

maybe next year?

tho I did get a slice of pumpkin pie from another friend's dinner (Judy left early and was rather surprised that Rowan wanted to come home with her rather than stay and play with his cousins)

spent the morn over at her place, going thru the store ads
there are some things I wouldn't mind getting during black friday sales but nothing SO needed that I'm spending the night camped out in front of the store to get. The closest was best buy's sony laptop but since I just bought myself a lifetime TiVo membership and already have a lappy, *shakes head* no.

tho I do want to get the 2G SD card for my Wii

and I feel SOOOOO bad for the employees!
like others, I *had* planned on blogging every single day for the month of Novemember.

where DID the days go???

I need more structure. otherwise, I'll spend the day playing the Wii, not even watching TV

or reading Fanfic

Today's number is 27!! (getting better at Tennis!!)

ok, sometime last month, I ordered the Amazon deal of buying a Series 2 Dual Tuner TiVo for $99 and getting a free $100 gift card (the reason the gift cards were free? when you open them, there's a piece of paper saying - buy the three year plan, pay for two -- expires 01/27/07. Yeah, not good anymore)

due to having a cable box to get the higher channels and the fact that it is at the other end of the apartment from my computer, I had also ordered the TiVo USB Wireless adapter.

which took the LONGEST time in trying to see my network (mainly because I was mis-spelling the password) the tivo network support dude? totally useless. Told me I'd have to either a) call Linksys for help or call the Geek Squad and PAY them to come out here to fix it *rolls eyes*

so last night I got it partially working in that it was seeing the basic cable channels but not anything above 99. that's because the first guy told me to take the RCA cables OFF the cable box, since I didn't "need" a secondary connection and attach them directly to the tv in, via TiVo out.

yeah, that didn't work

so today's call got that all straightened out, she even told me how to get tivo to recognize my tv, so now I only need the cable remote for On Demand which TiVo doesn't see.

need to record something to make sure the TiVo desktop can see the unit but otherwise, I'm golden.

meanwhile, the brighthouse HD DVR continues to be unplugged daily to be "rebooted"

beginning to wonder if I REALLY need HD...

pls not be offering the HD DVRs until MAJORITY of the bugs have been squished!!

I should NOT have to unplug my box upto three times a day to "reboot" it to get it to respond to the remote!

no, swapping boxes is not the answer, this is the FOURTH box

you're not microsoft

yeah, yeah, I know, I can go back "down" to a regular DVR but if I'm gonna do that, frak the DVR at all, I'll just stick with my TiVo!

Ok, its the only service song I can remember any of the words to.

For all those who have served,
who fought
who died
who have paid in blood

so we can live in Freedom.

I salute you, I howl your death song, I light a candle to guide your way between the worlds

Thank you seems so inadequate but its all I have to offer.

Thank you for your sacrifices.

For a while now, ever since I re-installed XP on my other box, Willow (my Crimson Red Palm Treo -- see icon) would not sync.

I kept getting the error message: computer can't see connection.

as I had not had a successful sync, I did not have a back up of the data.

So first, I had to PRY the case OFF
Then following the directions on the Palm website, I performed a soft reset.

no joy

then I did a system reset

still no joy

called AT&T tech support. stumped tier 1, transferred to tier 2, stumped HIM too and got cold dumped into the Palm tech support queue.

THEY wanted $25 before they would even start to trouble shoot the problem.

"Oh, we'll take your credit card info now and if it turns out we can't resolve the problem, we'll refund your money." excuse me but YEAH, RIGHT!

I solved the problem -- by plugging it into a USB port on my other Desktop. I'd use the laptop but the battery is acting up on it, don't want to go thru the hassle of installing the software for nothing.

Today's number is 48 :(
now that summer is more or less over.

but gas in Melbourne is around $3.09

it wasn't this smeggin high during Katrina!!

the local Walmart is $2.99 and if you use the Walmart card, it takes 3 cents off but sheesh.

yeah, yeah, I know, it STILL isn't as expensive as Canada or especially Europe.

but we don't HAVE a public trans system TO use instead!!

at 1:01pm ET, the Orbiter Discovery touched down on the runway, complete with sonic booms, ending one of the most challenging missions to date!

that as much as I love this place, there does seem to be some advantage of a "sleepy, half empty" complex.

like NOT being woken at 5:30ish by a dog who just will NOT shut up.

its bad enough during the day but granted most people aren't home all day.

but not when everyone ELSE does not get up so early.

its bad enough I complain about the kids to the point it was necessary to call the police to come by (and I've noticed there seems to be a cruiser making a slow trip thru the complex in the late afternoon when the kids are out to play.

then again, the kids attend the same school that has seen 8 bomb threats called in within a month, to the point they have to have a month of SATURDAY classes to make up all the time lost.

man, when did I turn into an old grouch?

need to get brighthouse back out here because the remote isn't controlling their box

and I get to spend the day pulling all the boxes apart in order to get the TiVo actually BE a DT since the tech who showed up over an hour late couldn't be arsed to stay around long enough to make sure ANYthing worked.
