Learn something new...

just got thru watching a VERY interesting show on the Food Network called 'Edible Enemies'

Which repeats: Fri, Oct 19 10:00 AM ET

explains what the major 8 allergies are, what happens to people who ingest them (or are touched by someone who has ingested them, like that girl up in Canada who everyone thought she died due to kissing her boyfriend's peanut butter'd mouth)

What schools/colleges are doing to help better serve/protect their students

what some *restaurants* are doing (creating books that list the allergin ingridgents on the top of the page)
(tho honestly, if you DO have major food allergies and do NOT tell your server, its on you)

the clearer packaging guidlines going into effect

and yes, when they were talking about wheat allergies, I IMMEDIATELY thought of you [livejournal.com profile] ctorres!!

they also said some allergies could be masked by other symptoms, like migraines which made me think of [livejournal.com profile] allyson13

glad they're repeating it!

The restaurants thing is good I think--I have a mild milk allergy, so I'm not at risk of actually dying if I eat dairy, but I do get pretty sick from it (though it's not lactose intolerance, the severity of it is more similar to that) and often times I've asked if something contained dairy and specified that I was allergic, only to wind up getting something with milk products in it. I think the problem is that a) often times, servers don't know all the ingredients, so they don't think to mention something either to the customer or the kitchen, and b) somewhere along the line, a bunch of articles suggested that if you really don't want an ingredient on your food, claim to be allergic because chefs take that seriously...so now I think a lot of people kind of shrug of like, oh you're allergic and think someone is just picky.
